The Twist – Düsseldorf

Architecture - Urban Planning

Project Description

The Twist is a mixed-use tower design for the city of Düsseldorf, Germany. The tower uses rounded-off triangular floor plates that slightly rotate each floor, giving its unique twisting form. The result of this unique shape, is a reduction of lateral wind loads, resulting in slimmer structural components. The tower is designed to offer maximum flexibility for its current and future tenants. All floors are designed to allow for multiple use classifications. Currently the tower is divided into 3 zones. These three zones are defined by their different uses, commercial, office and residential, however they can re-designated, re-organized or combined for future use changes.

This project did not only focus on the design of the tower, however also focuses on its surrounding environment, creating a unique ensemble that ties the TWIST in its surrounding landscape. The underground parkade along with the above ground shopping center, seamlessly connects with the tower while allowing the connecting landscape to flow across the adjacent highway creating the much needed access to the opposite side.
